I have just installed XFree86 3.1.2 on NetBSD-1.1, and have a problem. When
i start xdm (xdm -nodaemon) from the console, i get a message in the
xdm-errors file saying that it can't open /dev/ttyv1.

Why does it try to open ttyv1 when the console is ttyv0?

I have recompiled the kernel for vt0 (instead of pc0)...
