I tried for quite a while, too.

I eventually found a Linux binary of it out there and ran that instead.  
It may be cheating, but unless you have the chops or desire to sit and 
hack C code ad nauseam, it can be a relief just to get something running. 

The upshot from what I've seen: it can still dump core but at least it 
seems to be usable.  Save often.  :^P
