I've really only heard VIF (virtual interface) used in the context of 
configuring a multicast router.  I think what you're probably thinking of 
is "interface aliases".

Interface aliases can be configured using ifconfig(8).  We have a simple 
way to configure interface aliases at boot time.  Create a file called 
/etc/ifaliases and place entries with the following format in it:

205.44.36.26 le0

...etc...

/etc/netstart will automatically do all the goo you need.
