You don't really provide much information, so as to be able to "guess" anything.
It could be that you are comparing Apples and Oranges.
Samba is using TCP/IP, whereas Nt etc. probably are running NetBEUI. If thats
the explanation for any speed differences I don't know.

Is it portable ? Don't know. The author wrote it on HP-UX 9.01, so maybe not as
bad as if it were written on Linux (NO smiley intended).
