sigh... sometimes it forks itself and sometimes it
doesn't.  in a first approximation, it doesn't when
i don't use &, and does when i do.   stuuuuupid...

i'll just have to find the source and see...  and fix it.
running down a ps list to find it isn't elegant to me.
