Uh, if you have to use MDMBUF with your modem, either:
(1) your modem is Old, or
(2) you have a Bad cable (or completely tweaked serial ports;
i think some Macs may have these, but you didn't say
on what _kind_ of serial port you were hoping to use it).
The only time i've used MDMBUF (and the reason that i wrote the code for
it) was to easily deal with older terminals that use DTR/DCD flow
control...
It's not something that you really should be using on a modem, if at
all possible, because it means that you can't get carrier detect.
