The packaged getty won't answer the phone for you (like, say, Gert
Doering's mgetty package will) -- set your modem parameters using
ats0=1
(for one ring, ats0=2 for two...) and store the
settings in your non-volatile ram with
at&w0
finally, make sure your modem uses configuration 0 when it starts
at&y0
these work for most modems I've seen. Your mileage may vary.

and neither one of them were able to make the modem answer to the external call. The modem's behavior was just light the led (auto answer I think) when the phone rings.
