People,
I sent this out 20 days ago and silence was the stern reply.
Anybody got _absolutely_any_ ideas what could be going on before I
dive head first into the source?

According to Brett Lymn:

Folks,
I remember a little while ago someone complained about getting
"swap_pager_clean" error messages. The guy was pretty vague about his
setup so it was hard to work out what was going on. I too get these
messages like this:

May 4 17:20:36 siren /netbsd: swap_pager_clean: clean of page 536000 failed
May 4 17:20:37 siren /netbsd: swap_pager_clean: clean of page 764000 failed
May 4 17:20:37 siren /netbsd: swap_pager_clean: clean of page 727000 failed
May 4 17:20:37 siren /netbsd: swap_pager_clean: clean of page 6b1000 failed
May 4 17:20:38 siren /netbsd: swap_pager_clean: clean of page 72d000 failed

I don't know if it is significant but my swap is not on my boot device
(boot is wd0 and swap is on sd1b). I have the correct kernel config
to deal with this. These messages are a bit of a pain, especially if
I do some heavy X stuff which chews memory.

I did try reducing the size of my swap by a couple of cylinders but
this seems to make no difference.

Anyone with any ideas at all?

 My config is:

NetBSD 1.0 (no patches)
486DX/25 with 16Meg of RAM
ESDI drive as boot and /usr
SCSI drive as swap and play area

The disk label for the SCSI disk is this:

# /dev/sd1a:
type: SCSI

flags:
bytes/sector: 512
sectors/track: 71
tracks/cylinder: 15

interleave: 1
trackskew: 0
cylinderskew: 0
headswitch: 0 # milliseconds

3 partitions:

of things, like glass, only dark... dark glass things on our eyes..."
