Rather than worrying about compress(1), you can edit INN's config.data to 
use /usr/bin/gzip, instead.  I've been using it just fine... but make 
sure that you're not breaking outgoing feeds before you commit yourself 
to it (I wouldn't expect any problems, but on the other hand, who knows?).
