This didn't fix my problem but it gave me a way to lengthen the Slip 
packets.  I worked for the most part, my packets are no longer just 296 but 
596 (something close) but still not the 1006 expected.  Also, now when I do 
a netstat -i (to check the MTUs) I get nothing!
