This problem didn't exist in 0.9, so I assume you're running 1.0B.
The serial driver has been changed to operate in a more UNIX-standard
way, which is to say that it blocks if you open it and CD is deasserted.
The easiest solution is for you to add the 'local' keyword to the
/dev/tty01 line in your /etc/ttys file.  Reboot or run
/sbin/ttydefaults and you should be all set.

I compiled term119 and it checked out according to the included "test"
program, but I've never actually tried to connect to anything with it.
