   I got the 486 with an 8-bit card and tried to install NetBSD on it
   and the same error occured.

I've run a 8-bit card in trinity (which is a 386DX-20 acting as a NFS
file server) and not had any problems like you described, with
1.0-beta.  I've not tried it under 0.9 with the same card.

   I put FreeBSD 1.5.1.1 (or something, whatever is the latest) on it
   and it worked flawlessly.

There have been a fair number of changes in that driver in the last
year.  It's really not a fair comparison.
