Any objections to use

   <releaseinfo role="latest-release" />

to insert the latest NetBSD release number from share/xsl/global.xsl

and this XSLT template

  <!-- insert number of latest NetBSD release -->
  <xsl:template match="releaseinfo[@role='latest-release']">
    <xsl:variable name="empty_string" />
    <xsl:if test="normalize-space(.)=$empty_string">
      <xsl:value-of select="$latest-release" />
    </xsl:if>
  </xsl:template>
