what about updating the doc http://www.netbsd.org/Documentation/x/#anti_aliased
so that it includes modification of the /etc/fonts/fonts.conf.
this is the file read by fontconfig-2.1nb4 (widely use now, I believe)

the part "4. Configure Xft" could contain s'thg like :
> edit /etc/fonts/fonts.conf
> find the line "<dir>/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts</dir>"
> add the line  "<dir>/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TrueType</dir>"

Any pro's & cons ?
