My concrete problem was that
/usr/pkg/libexec/dbus-daemon-launch-helper didn't have the setuid bit
set.
Also, from some warnings in the startup log (-vv) I decided to install
consolekit.

pulseaudio now looks much better, I got xine to play through it :)
