 I don't see how it isn't relevant, since if I revert this change as you
 ask, we go back to non-functioning line editing in xterms spawned after
 xdm.
 
 Is there another temporary solution I can deploy that you'd find
 acceptable before I can figure out how to make everyone happy?
 
 I could make xterm create login shells. Obviously it doesn't
 make anything better for other terminal emulators, but it's a start.
