 This is operator error!  Thanks to prompting by msaitoh@ I looked into
 things a bit closer and discovered that I had changed the kernel config
 file between the old/working/9.99.42 and new/failing/9.99.52 builds.
 
 The new build attempted to "wire"
 
  	ihphy0 at wm0 phy 0
 
 but (as shown in the dmesg extracts) it should have specified phy 2.
 
 I will close this pr.
