 Just to clarify: this is an already installed system and you just replaced
 the new kernel?
 
 If not: what install media have you been booting from?
 
 The message means that init could not access /dev/console at all and
 was not able to run the MAKEDEV script either (or MAKEDEV did not create
 the proper device node).
