Successfully copied to USB:
[tom@new-host-4 netbsd]$ sudo dd if=NetBSD-7.1-amd64-install.img of=/dev/sdb1 bs=32k

Using Dell Inspiron 13 (7000 Series)
Dell bios recognizes only 2 boot options:  Fedora and Windows

Fedora disk utility reports:
Model:  General USB Flash Disk (0100)
Partitioning:  Master Boot Record
Device:  /dev/sdb1
Partition Type:  0xa9 (Bootable)
Contents:  Unknown

You would probably need to try this on a Dell Inspiron 13 (7000 Series)
