 % strings /netbsd8 | grep '@christos'
 @christos: carp_ifdetach()
 @christos: carpdetach() detaching %s
 @christos: carp_clone_destroy() %s
 %
 
 but none show up - the kernel panics earlier.

 There's an idea... but
 
 % fgrep carpdev /etc/ifconfig.carp0
 carpdev wm0
 %
 
 which is still attached.
