Likewise, I was unable to reproduce my observations copying my small
  test fragment with I/O redirection:
$ cat svcs-tst.txt > /mnt/tmp/svcs-tst-cat.txt Copying the entire "/etc/services" file that way, however, produced the
  same corruption.  I have a 'ktruss' output of that operation as well.

Does this still happen with a kernel from HEAD?
