 Can't comment on nouveau, but if ntpdate is taking too long you probably are
 not using the best NTP servers that you could (though it is always going
 to take a few seconds to make sure it is measuring the delays to the servers
 correctly).  You also want to check whether the delay is in NTP, or in a
 DNS lookup to obtain the addresses of the NTP servers - particularly if
 you normally run with a local DNS server or cache - that won't be available
 when ntpdate is run (the time needs to be set before the DNS starts) - it
 can often be a good idea to config NTP servers by address (and write a
 script to validate the addresses and run it once a day from cron.)
