 Hi!
 
 For future reference, this issue can be summarized as follows:
 
 with old Xorg (1.10.x) and vesa driver, X will perform very badly:
 running `su` will take ~1 minute, when X is running.
 
 with new Xorg (1.18.x) and vesa driver, X itself performs fine, killing
 X results in the same performance problem: running `su` will take ~1
 minute. (this is pkgsrc Xorg)
 
 In my case, I am able to use the nouveau driver, so I do not experience
 the problem. Only change was the choice of driver.
 
 I was running Xorg badly (specifying BusID in xorg.conf.d).
 Having working nouveau is even better than having vesa fixed!
 
 Left details in case anyone else has this problem.
