 I swapped out cards from the NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GT to a NVIDIA Quadro FX 1800 and haven't had any problems since.  So it seems to be a 9800 issue even though the both use the same Xorg nvidia driver.
 
 I don't believe it is bad hardware since I've used the 9800 on linux without issues for a long time.
 
 If anyone is willing to investigate I'm willing to give up the card.  Otherwise, feel free to close this PR.
