 it occurs to me that we've kept the xf86-video-ati driver back at
 6.x because the 7.x driver demands KMS.  the 7.x driver is not
 new at this point, and perhaps some of the display problems we're
 seeing are due to the older driver.
 
 updating will mean that all cards *require* drmkms or are forced
 to use the vesa card... so it's pretty big hammer.
 
 if someone wants to play with this, that would be great.  i'll
 try to look, but i may not have time in the coming month.
