 I have seen similar problems.
 
 The black areas can be one letter big, or triangular (in steps) or
 plain rectangles.
 
 I'm currently using
 
 [    43.604] (--) RADEON(0): Chipset: "ATI RV730 PRO [Radeon HD 4650]" (ChipID = 0x9498)
 
 on NetBSD-7.99.3/amd64 from Dec 21.
