 For the case of the Shuttle SG45H7 small form factor machine with
 Intel Core 2 quad Q9400 CPU and G45 Eaglelake Intel integrated
 graphics, the suggestion of Soren Jacobsen:

 did result in being able to use startx to start fluxbox and run an
 xterm.  However similar to behavior observed for this machine in
 earlier iterations of drm2, any gtk (or glib2?) application such as
 gvim or Xfce4's Terminal has unreadable text / corrupted fonts.
