 X cut & paste, from/to xterms

The problematic behaviour seems to be a result of using an UTF8 LC_CTYPE.
 With LC_CTYPE=de_DE.UTF-8 or LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 I get e2 88 92 as dash
 instead of 2d.

(As checked via man echo > echo.out; hexdump -C echo.out)
