Same thing, I continued my experiments without starting X after that.

It used to work (using zzz(8)), both from within X and without.

Doesn't make a difference. Always the screen shows the 80x25 console.
Without X, I get a few informational messages from ACPI, but nothing
unusual. However, the Suspend-LED on the LED panel does glow up.
Mind you, suspension doesn't really work. I'm not trying to get it to
wake up again, it doesn't even complete the suspension. The screen
doesn't blank and it doesn't react to keyboard or pressing the power
button for <5s.
