    5.1 Install Notes says in "Known Problems" section:
 
    >> Using block device nodes (e.g., wd0a) directly for I/O may cause
    >> a kernel crash when the file system containing /dev is FFS and

    >> Workaround: use raw disk devices (e.g., rwd0a), or remount
