there is dri support for MGA available now.  xorg-server has also been
updated to 1.6.5, and the mga driver has been updated a couple of times
(including at least one on the netbsd-5 branch.)

i'll look at adding a note about ShadowFB somewhere.

(for DRI support, you may need to build a kernel with it enabled unless
you are using very recent -current.)
