The section describing how to build a kernel (cited above), gives the wrong 
option to -T.  I eventually found that:
  $ ./build.sh -O ../obj -T tooldir.NetBSD-5.0-i386 kernel=GENERIC
worked.

To be honest, I don't see why the option is needed (it is) - instead "do the 
right thing" which here would presumably mean pick up the tools from where 
"./build.sh tools" would put them.
