 Ok. A break on the serial console will cause the alpha to enter ddb.
 Maybe putty sends a break to the serial port when connecting to it.
 Also, when the system is powered off or in sleep, it causes electrical
 conditions on the serial port which will be interpreted as a break by
 the remote end.
