After shutting down the X server on the i386 machine I found this errors
     on the console:

syntax error: line 1 of pc
The XKEYBOARD keymap compiler (xkbcomp) reports:
     > Error: Error interpreting include file "pc"
     > Exiting
     > Abandoning symbols file "default"

However, I can not find any trace of a relevant "*pc*" file installed
on my system or build in $OBJDIR anywhere - where should it come frome and
     where should it be installed?

 ah..

try extracting xbase.tgz and watch for errors. then delete the
old symbols/pc directory and re-extract again and it might work..

xkeyboard-config repalced xkbdata, but it also replaced a subdir
with a file, and upgrades don't know about dealing with this yet.
 (there's another PR.)

 .mrg.
