It seems that xterm cuts the selection to 1024 bytes.

select a huge amount of text in an xterm and paste it, e.g., to wc(1)

surprisingly the problem disappears if a 8859-15 locale is used

it seems that the config file
/usr/X11R7/lib/X11/locale/*/XI18N_OBJS
causes the problem, it seems to be wrong (outdated?) in xorg
