Failure to boot i386/amd64 netbs-5.0 cd

Hello everyone, im currently having a problem booting netbsd-5.0 for the i386 and amd64 on my main desktop.
The boot goes fine until i get an error something like this:

sd1, failed to read device size
wd1: device timeout reading fsbn
umass0: BBB request failed.

im sorry if this message looks odd, it's just that I cant really copy the text if I can't boot.
im not particulary an expert, but i'm sure this has something to do with my built-in sd card reader.
would building a custom kernel without support for such a device be possible? If so, how would I go about doing this without being able to boot into a netbsd system?

Thanks in advance if anyone can help me figure this out, I've set up a netbsd system for a friend, and would love to use it as my main desktop machine.

 Kolby Crouch.
