Issue was "USE_FORT=yes" in /etc/mk.conf -- I added this after reading thread "USE_SSP" of 28 Sept, 2007 on current-users@.
The various kernel re-compiles worked fine with this setting, so it came to not be on my radar as a problem later when my "./build.sh distribution" failed. Removed line, all works well.
