As another work-around you can also continue with your 4.0* release (candid=
ate),
but update sys/dev/pci/azalia_codec.c to a -current revision (at me v1.45
=66rom HEAD (v4.99.33)) and playing around with inputs.dac, outputs.sel21 a=
nd
inputs.mix20.sel25. Your Thinkpad R61 will make noise at least out of the
integreated speakers (the green head-phones jacket doesn't say anything use=
ful).
The replacement of that file was proposed by Juan RP in current-users (than=
ks=20
to him at this point):

So, at least you can hear something. However, any application software is o=
nly
capable of decreasing, but not increasing the sound. The mixer variable=20
which gets decreased in such cases is inputs.dac. You have to increase it=
=20
manually. Is there also a work-around for that?
I assume it's because the outputs.master variable is missing?!
