 I have a minimal /etc/ntp.conf, it contains

 server north-america.pool.ntp.org
 driftfile /var/db/ntp.drift
 logconfig -syncstatus

and ntpd starts and stops fine if I don't set
 $pidfile in /etc/rc.d/ntpd -- if it's set in
/etc/rc.d/ntpd it also must be set in /etc/ntp.conf.

I don't know what mechanism is used to kill
ntpd without setting $pidfile. I've not had any
issues and favor a simpler config and rc.

It didn't occur to me that I needed to set the
pidfile in conf. I just thought the rc it was
quirky. Feel free to close it if you prefer the
 existing operation.
