You can see differences between GENERIC and INSTALL by config files,
sys/arch/sun3/conf/{GENERIC,INSTALL}. One reason why install.md script
installs INSTALL kernel may be that GENERIC won't boot on some less memory
machines (like 3/50 with 4MB RAM), but not sure.

You can see the running kernel name in kernel log by dmesg(8)
or output of "uname -v". Could you check again if the GENERIC

As you expected, the kernel that remained as /netbsd after the install was the INSTALL kernel. Possiblythis problem should be converted into a documentation type problem. For tape7 of the installI selected ftp://ftp4.us.netbsd.org/pub/NetBSD/NetBSD/NetBSD-3.0/sun3/binary/kernel/netbsd-GENERIC.gzbut apparently it wasn't automatically installed. What should I have done during the installto have the GENERIC kernel installed (other than loading syssrc.tar.gz and rebuilding from source)?
The following pages led me to believe that GENERIC would automatically be installed:ftp://ftp4.us.netbsd.org/pub/NetBSD/NetBSD/NetBSD-3.0/sun3/INSTALL.htmlkern-GENERIC This set contains a NetBSD/sun3 3.0 GENERIC kernel, named /netbsd. You must install this distribution set. And: http://netbsd.org/Ports/sun3/faq.html (NetBSD/Sun3 features extensive binary compatibility with SunOS 4.1.xprograms. Static SunOS executables will run without any extra setup.)
