 A guess at something to do with the size of the (uncompressed) install
 kernel.  Maybe to do with the systems memory map?  Holes in the DRAM?
 
 The install kernel will need DRAM at addresses from 1MB upto (about) 12M,
 (there is a limit at 15M on many systems).
