 looks like it's hardware-related somehow.
 
 the problem goes away if I replace the CPU and/or the motherboard.
 
 some exciting experiences:
 
 - this (faulty?) CPU works good in any other machine (including a
 very similar TUSL2-C based machine)
 
 - this (faulty?) mainboard works good with any other CPUs i've tried
 (actually a 800MHz Coppermine Celeron, and a 1133MHz Tualatin P3-S)
 
 - this machine (motherboard and CPU combo) works good with any other OS
 except NetBSD-2 (including NetBSD-1.6, Linux and Windows Server 2003 - sic!
 the problem occured when upgraded NetBSD-1.6 to 2.0)
 
 Hey man, I just hate hardware!
