The last changes to the ipw driver has definitely improved the situation,
but the chip has hung twice since with kernel messages like:

 Feb 18 16:14:26 netbsd /netbsd: ipw0: device timeout
 Feb 18 16:21:34 netbsd /netbsd: ipw0: device configuration failed

 reloading the firmware restored it.

In this case, it had been operating for ~19 days (with a few firmware
reloads due to waking the machine from sleep) and I was running pkg_info
 remotely.

sorry, no clues on the source of the problem.
