 Addendum:

apparently, the LPRng script isn't conforming to the /etc/rc.d stuff at
all. I have started /usr/pkg/sbin/lpd manually now and removed a few
stale pid files in /var/run, and now the script seems to work. It
didn't however work right after installation (don't know exactly why).
The PR may get closed but the package maintainer could do me (and
others) a favour and provide an rc.d-compatible script, which uses a
variable other than "lpd", as described above.
