At what point does it fail - you might have to be quick to see any
messages output (or maybe induce some error conditions).

Without access the the failing system it is hard to fix.

If the code is suceeding in loading '/boot' then I'd suspect the
difference is to do with having split the stack into a different
segment (from the data).

However I suspect there is actually a BIOS bug....
