the new version of ntpdate is not fully respecting the -s option and is sending output to stdout. Hence when run from cron emails are generated each time the program runs.

Previous versions only sent messages to the syslog when used with -s
ntpdate -s <server>

to cron.

Let it run, you will get emails of the form:

Subject: Cron <root@shark2> /usr/sbin/ntpdate -s fw-lan fw2-lan
