Not actually -- the manual page informs you which version _of NetBSD_
the utility first appeared in, not which version _of any OS_.
domainname(1) has been around as long as YP/NIS has...

This will not break anything, in fact I recommend it:

$ grep hostname /etc/rc.conf
hostname="himring.draga.com"
