>Description:
    The generic kernel that is installed by the ISO CD-ROM for NetBSD/VAX 1.6 lacks ppp support. A replacement kernel was placed on the netbsd ftp site, but it does not work.
    For background, the kernel in 1.5x works perfectly with my hardware and network configuration.
    This is the output from /var/log/messages:

Oct  1 19:56:51 notung chat[221]: send (^M)
Oct 1 19:56:51 notung pppd[218]: Serial connection established.
Oct  1 19:56:51 notung pppd[218]: Using interface ppp0
Oct  1 19:56:51 notung pppd[218]: Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/ttyS2
Oct  1 19:57:22 notung pppd[218]: LCP: timeout sending Config-Requests
Oct  1 19:57:22 notung pppd[218]: Connection terminated.
Oct 1 19:57:22 notung pppd[218]: Serial link is not 8-bit clean:
Oct 1 19:57:22 notung pppd[218]: All received characters had bit 7 set to 0
Oct  1 19:57:23 notung pppd[218]: Exit.

>How-To-Repeat:
    Install NetBSD/VAX 1.6 and attempt to make a ppp connection to an Internet Service Provider.
>Fix:
    Recompile the kernel. Then test it and verify that it works. Post the new kernel to the ftp site.
