Another way is to to ask the server to do on-fly compression.
ftp.netbsd.org isn't configured to but ftp.fr.netbsd.org is:
ftp ftp://ftp.fr.netbsd.org/pub/NetBSD/packages/distfiles/ghostscript/pdf_sec.ps.gz
[...]
local: pdf_sec.ps.gz remote: pdf_sec.ps.gz
229 Entering Extended Passive Mode (|||57482|)
150 Opening BINARY mode data connection for '/bin/gzip'.
  4528 17.49 KB/s
226 Transfer complete.
