Just to add to the lossage, I get very similar lossage on my Indy with a
new kernel built on 9/17/2001.  fsck fscked up my FS to such a degree 
that after the reboot it was no longer mountable.

I don't yet have detailed info, but wanted to put in my "me too" so we
don't forget sgimips.
